Kirkfieldbank

A 13th Century Knight and his Lady

William Wallace was a man in need of sanctuary after his murder of the English Sheriff of Lanark, Hasselrig, in 1297. He turned to
his friend Patrick Auchinleck of Gilbank; subsequently renamed Kilbank, at present day Kirkfieldbank. Gilbank was linked to the lost medieval chapel of Greenrig (both of which have left no visible remains) and both were located on lands owned by the Priory at Lesmahagow. The detailed references to Kirkfieldbank in Blind Harry show that he was using sources now lost to us. It is generally agreed that this information came from Sir Thomas Gray, parson of Libberton, near Carnwath. Other local friends of Wallace could have included Walter Newbigging from Newbigging, also near Carnwath.
