Lesmahagow Food Vessels 2500-1500 BCE

Three Lesmahagow Knocken Hill  food vessels (bowls) circa 2500-1500 BCE

(photographed in Glasgow Kelvingrove Museum 18th July 2014)

These three bowls came from a series of 16 cist burials.

CIST – from around 4,500 years ago people were buried in individual graves .
Mourners in the Bronze Age often placed items like these bowls in the grave beside the body.
We don’t what people believed happened after death, so we can only guess why these bowls were part of the burial.
